Maserati Joins the SUV Market with the Levante

While Maserati has been hinting to the addition of an SUV to its lineup since 2003, nearly 13 years later it is finally coming to fruition. Originally called the Kubang concept when it debuted at the Frankfurt auto show more than a decade ago, the updated Levante is just as impressive as the original with everything that makes a Maserati a Maserati. The all-new Maserati Levante SUV is scheduled to arrive sometime in the first half of 2016 and rumors are that the final version of this luxury SUV will make its debut at the Detroit auto show in January 2016.

The ins and outs of the Maserati Levante

While there are currently only spy shots of a highly-camouflaged Levante, artist renderings and an out-of-date concept version, it is expected that it will look similar to the 2011 version, but with a more modern Maserati look and feel. It will be based on the same platform as the Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans, altered to accommodate a larger passenger compartment and cargo area. Whatever the final exterior looks like, it is sure that it will be quintessentially Maserati. While no details have been released as to the interior specifics of the Levante SUV, it will most likely take be the same materials and styling as the Quattroporte and Ghibli adapted to fit the larger passenger compartment. In addition to what is sure to be a long list of standard features and available options, the Levante will most likely be available with the same variety of stand-alone and package options as the rest of the Maserati lineup.

The inner workings of the Maserati Levante

With Maserati’s limited lineup of vehicles, the Levante will most likely be powered by the same choice of engines as the Ghibli and Quattroporte as well. This will give buyers the option of a 400 plus horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 or 523 horsepower turbo 3.8-liter V8, both paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. While the zero to 60 times may be slightly slower than the Levante’s lighter sedan siblings but is still estimated to be around five seconds. It will also be equipped with Maserati’s Q4 all-wheel-drive system. The Levante will also most likely be equipped with similar handling and traction control components as the Ghibli and Quattroporte to give it a car-like ride and feel in case you want to test out the sport aspect of the sport luxury Levante SUV. While all the details have yet to be revealed about the all-new Maserati Levante, it is certainly expected to be a competitor in the sports luxury SUV market. For Maserati fans, it offers all the appointments, power, and performance you expect plus a roomy passenger cabin and extra room for luggage, sports equipment, shopping bags, or whatever you may need to haul from one place to another.
