Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Review

The second-generation Range Rover Evoque rides on a new platform to make way for a new hybrid-electric powertrain option. Changes have also been made to the exterior and interior.

There are now two different powertrains to choose from and there’s also more off-road technologies. The Evoque is the first vehicle from Land Rover to feature the optional ClearSight Ground View system, for example, which allows you to virtually see beneath the front of the vehicle while off-roading! 

The Evoque comes in a number of different trim levels. It’s the most affordable vehicle in the Range Rover lineup. It’s also the smallest and so it offers less interior space than the other  models.

The all-new Range Rover Evoque looks stylish and modern. Building on the original model’s design, the 2020 Evoque continues to offer a distinctive coupe-like silhouette. Its pronounced shoulders and wheel arches help amplify its dramatic proportions and it looks even better with the optional 21” wheels. There are new slim LED headlights and taillights. There are also premium LED headlights you can opt for. The flush door handles, meanwhile, add to the smooth, sculpted aesthetic of the Evoque. 

R-Dynamic trims push the boundaries with an even bolder, sportier design complete with burnished copper accents. The range-topping Range Rover Evoque First Edition also features unique exterior touches, like special 20” wheels and illuminated tread plates. If you’re a fan of black exterior accents, know you can opt for those too!

Moving inside the redesigned Evoque now, you’ll find uncluttered surfaces and premium materials. It was designed to feel like a calm and serene space. There’s new seating, which you can add heating, cooling, massage, and memory to. Those seats are offered in a range of materials, including premium alternatives to leather. 

Five can fit inside the compact luxury SUV. Thanks to its new mixed-metal Premium Transverse Architecture, there’s now some more space for those passengers to enjoy. It has specifically resulted in more rear passenger knee room. There’s also more small storage space inside the Evoque (like larger front door bins) and there’s up to 50.5 cubic feet of cargo space when the rear seats are folded, though that does still trail competitors.

Since the Evoque is the smallest Range Rover, it’s just not going to feel as spacious inside as the other models. You might want to keep that in mind if you plan on always having a packed vehicle. But, it’s also more affordable. So, that’s nice! 

There’s USB ports for keeping your devices charged and a standard rearview camera for backing up. While there’s also standard interior lighting, you can opt for configurable ambient lighting. There’s also panoramic roof options to allow light to beautifully enter the Evoque’s cabin. 

As for the technology featured, there’s the Touch Pro system that comes standard with a 10” touchscreen and Navigation Pro. Apple CarPlay/Android Auto also comes standard with that. If you’d like, you can upgrade to the Touch Pro Duo system and you’ll get an additional 10” screen below. You’ll also get a head-up display and a 12.3” interactive driver display. And the cabin air ionization system is yet another luxe upgrade you can opt for!

As for performance, there are two powertrain options. There continues to be the standard two-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that’s plenty powerful and is paired to a nine-speed automatic. The P250 makes 246 horsepower and comes in the base and First Edition trims. The second option is the P300 and it uses the turbo four-cylinder with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to make 296 horsepower. It comes standard on the R-Dynamic trims. All-wheel drive with driveline disconnect comes standard no matter which powertrain you opt for. 

The Evoque is also off-road capable with 8.35 inches of ground clearance and a 30.6 degree departure angle, combined with Terrain Response 2 and available adaptive dynamics. There’s also the optional new ClearSight Ground View system, a first for Land Rover! It allows you to virtually see under the front of your Evoque, helping you more easily navigate rough terrain. There’s also the available ClearSight interior rear-view mirror. It displays a wide-angle camera view of the area behind the vehicle to allow you to still see out the back of your Evoque, even when you have a bunch of cargo stacked up in the cargo area or tall passengers blocking your normal view. 

There’s also plenty of highly advanced standard and optional driver assist technologies to help keep you safe while on the go. For example, an extensive air bag system, lane keep assist, emergency braking, a rearview camera, front and rear parking aid, driver condition monitor, and more all come standard on the Evoque. More advanced options include blind spot assist and high-speed emergency braking, among others.

The Range Rover Evoque is the smallest and most budget-friendly vehicle in the Range Rover lineup. The base model has a starting price of $42,650. The range-topping Range Rover Evoque First Edition, by comparison, starts at $56,850. Adding options to your Evoque will, of course, drive up the price.

As for competitors, you might want to consider the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Audi Q3, or Volvo XC40. 

You could also always check out the Range Rover Velar or Range Rover Sport if you need more space, though those models are more expensive.

The second-generation Evoque continues to be a stylish, yet capable compact luxury SUV. SUVs.com is a fan of the smooth, sculpted exterior and the optional Touch Pro Duo infotainment system. It’s also nice that there is that more powerful mild-hybrid powertrain option now, though it doesn’t result in improved fuel economy figures. While the inside of the Evoque isn’t nearly as spacious as some of Range Rover’s other models, it’s still comfortable. It also doesn’t offer as much cargo space as competitors, so you might want to keep that in mind! It does have a much more budget-friendly starting price, though, and that might help make up for its more cramped interior space! Plus, it makes purchasing and getting into a Range Rover more feasible!
