Overview

Produced with more than seven decades of 4x4 engineering experience, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler remains an iconic and highly capable off-roader!

The Wrangler continues to offer a body-on-frame design, front and rear five-link suspension system, solid axles, electronic lockers, and is one of the few SUVs to offer a six-speed manual transmission in addition to its available eight-speed automatic. Every Jeep Wrangler also sports the highly coveted Trail Rated badge. To earn it, the vehicle must be capable of passing a number of grueling tests to prove its ability to withstand tough terrain, harsh conditions, and inclement weather!

The Wrangler’s powertrain lineup was updated for 2020. There’s now a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 as an option, which produces 260 horsepower and 442 lb.-ft. of torque. It is a “late availability” powertrain, though, which means it should arrive more toward the tail end of the 2020 model year.

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler has a fun design. It comes in two-door and four-door body styles. There are a number of different models to choose from, and several different engine options.

SUVs.com test drove a 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara with the Sky One-Touch Power Top. There’s also other tops to choose from, but the one-touch function is amazing and helps instantly deliver than open-air feel.

Performance

You just can’t beat the legendary 4x4 capability of the Jeep Wrangler! Over 75 years of off-road revolution is rolled into the vehicle. It’s ready for whatever adventure you throw at it, with a variety of standard and available 4x4 systems to help give you impressive traction and get you where you need to go.

Standard electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, trailer-sway control, Hill-start Assist, and brake traction control are among the more than 75 available safety and security features the Wrangler offers.

There’s also a number of different powertrain options, including a new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 which Jeep says it’s offering because of overwhelming consumer demand. It will have late availability, though, so don’t expect it until the tail end of the 2020 model year. It’s also only being offered with Wrangler four-door models. It’s rated at 260 horsepower and offers a whopping 442 lb.-ft. of torque! A new eight-speed automatic transmission comes standard with it, as well as the heavy-duty Dana 44 axles that are typically reserved for the most off-road capable Rubicon model.

The Jeep Wrangler’s base engine, meanwhile, is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with engine stop-start technology (ESS). It delivers 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. It can be paired with a six-speed manual transmission, or an eight-speed automatic. There’s also an optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with ESS which delivers 270 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. Depending on the Wrangler model you opt for, both the 3.6-liter Pentastar and 2.0-liter turbocharged engines can be coupled with a 48-volt mild hybrid system for more low-end torque. That makes for a total of five powertrain options (not all are offered on every model).

High-strength steel skid plates help protect key components of the Wrangler while off-roading like the fuel tank, while heavy-duty skid plates offer optimal strength, durability, and performance. There’s also heavy-duty front and rear tow hooks to help pull your friends out of the mud when they get stuck!

For the Wrangler with the most off-road capability, opt for the Rubicon model with its advanced traction systems, Tru-Lok Electronic Locking Differentials, and Electronic Front Sway Bar Disconnect.

Interior

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler’s interior blends iconic style with modern technology to help enhance your driving experience.

The seats are designed to offer comfort and support while you’re out exploring. They also come in a variety of color and trim combinations. While cloth seating is standard for most, leather seating is available on models like the Sahara.

What’s nice is that the Wrangler offers a wash-out interior with weather-resistant removable carpet. You’re able to easily hose parts down and let the muddy water flow out of the vehicle through the one-way floor drain.

For rocking out while off-roading, there’s the available nine-speaker Alpine Premium Audio System. It comes with an overhead sound bar, an all-weather subwoofer in the back, and a 552-watt amplifier.

As for infotainment, there’s the fourth-generation Uconnect system. The state-of-the-art system is easily customizable with drag-and-drop functionality. While a 5.0-inch screen with backup camera comes standard on the Wrangler Sport, there’s also the choice of larger 7.0- and 8.4-inch touchscreens with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. The 8.4-inch touchscreen includes embedded navigation. There’s also an available 7-inch Driver Information Digital Cluster Display. You can also customize that display to your liking.

If you’re the type to document your off-road adventures, know you can additionally opt for a 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot that covers up to eight devices! You’ll be able to download, upload, and stream throughout all your adventures.

If you live in an area where it snows a lot, the Wrangler might just be for you as it offers lots of capability and it brings the features you need to stand up to the cold weather! There’s available heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated exterior mirrors to help prevent ice and fog build-up.

As for cargo space, there’s not a ton of it with the two-door Wrangler. It offers 12.9 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, and up to 46.9 cubic feet of space when those seats are folded down. The four-door body style offers a lot more room for your gear with 31.7 cubic feet of space behind the second row, and up to 72.4 total cubic feet of space when that back row is folded down.

Exterior

The 2020 Wrangler continues to be a bold, rugged looking vehicle. Its iconic style offers head-turning road presence. Plus, multiple open-air options help bring the outside in!

Signature features include the iconic round headlamps, seven-slot keystone grille, the removable doors, and exposed hinges with the Torx tool-bit stamped into it. Then, there’s the fold-down windshield and innovative removable tops for that awesome open-air feel!

The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara that SUVs.com checked out featured a Sky One-Touch Power Top. It retracts the Wrangler’s roof all the way behind the rear passengers and nearly into the cargo area! It’s so easy and simple to use, allowing you to get the most out of your Jeep in just an instant. It works at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour and when combined with a fold-down windshield, helps you truly embrace what the great outdoors has to offer! The retractable top is available on Sahara and Rubicon four-door models.

As for the large tires and wheels, those always impress on the Wrangler! There’s a series of cool blacked-out options including 18-inch gloss black aluminum wheels, which come standard on the Sport Altitude.

The final look of your Wrangler largely depends on which model you opt for. The Sahara that SUVs.com test drove has pleasant silver accents and looks ready to hit to the city. The Rubicon, on the other hand, strikes an unmistakable off-roading look with a high stance accentuated by elevated fender flares that are designed to accommodate up to 35-inch tires! Those large tires don’t just look awesome, but also offer ample ground clearance and a larger surface area than regular tires for improved traction and more control on the off-road.

Pricing

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler varies in price depending on which model, body style, and engine you opt for.

A two-door 2020 Jeep Wrangler Sport with the 3.6-liter V6 engine and a 6-speed manual transmission starts at $28,995.

The four-door Sahara that SUVs.com test drove will set you back another $10,000 with the same engine setup. Upgrading the engine will add more to the cost. One of the most expensive Wrangler models is the Rubicon Recon. In four-door body style, it has a starting price of $46,880!

If you’re interested in purchasing a Wrangler, be sure to test drive it first! Also, ask about any specials or deals.

As for competitors, you could consider the new Land Rover Defender, Toyota 4Runner, or the upcoming Ford Bronco. Ford is specifically hoping to win over Jeep consumers with its Bronco.
