Ford Mustang Mach-E Review

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a slightly polarizing vehicle as some Mustang lovers were initially put off by the idea of an all-electric vehicle receiving the Mustang nameplate. Alas, the Mach-E has started making its ways to dealers and it is a big deal for Ford as the company hopes the sporty looking all-electric SUV will help it better compete with the likes of Tesla and other auto brands who are fighting for success in the electric vehicle space.

Ford says its Mach-E is born of the same all-American ideals that inspired its original Mustang, which took the world by storm back in 1964. The Mustang was known for being a fast, powerful, and rebellious vehicle.

The all-new Mach-E takes the Mustang nameplate into the future. It was developed in a century-old brick building located a flew blocks away from Henry Ford’s first factory in Detroit. The sleek SUV delivers spirited ride and handling, with state-of-the-art connected vehicle technology that helps the Mach-E improve over time.

The all-new, all-electric SUV is available with standard and extended-range battery options with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive powered by permanent magnet motors. When equipped with an extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive, the Mach-E delivers an EPA-estimated range of at least 300 miles. In extended-range all-wheel drive configurations, the Mach-E targets 346 horsepower. There are also two special performance versions of the Mach-E, the GT and GT Performance Edition, that target 480 hp. Ford says the GT is faster off the line than a Porsche Macan Turbo. The company also says the GT Performance Edition reaches 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, which is as fast off the line as the Porsche 911 GTS!

“People want a car that’s thrilling to drive, that looks gorgeous and that can easily adapt to their lifestyle — and the Mustang Mach-E delivers all of this in unmatched style,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford’s chief product development and purchasing officer.

While the Mach-E obviously looks different from the original Mustang, Ford says it is still instantly recognizable as a Mustang thanks to signature elements such as its long, powerful hood, rear haunch design, aggressive headlights, and the trademark tri-bar taillamps.

A unique aspect of the Mach-E’s exterior is its doors. Instead of having traditional door handles, the vehicle uses an electronically controlled door-latch system. When you have the key fob or your phone as a key on you, you’re able to press a button that slightly pops the door open and then with the front doors, you use pull handles to open them the rest of the way. The back doors lack those pull handles, though, and so you just push the button and stick your hand inside the door to open it the rest of the way.

Ford’s new all-electric architecture places the batteries inside the underbody of the Mach-E SUV and by doing so, Ford engineers and designers were able to create a vehicle that maximizes space for five passengers and cargo.

“Thanks to advances in battery technology, the Mustang Mach-E is the kind of car that gets people excited about driving, with a sporty, beautiful silhouette that delivers an incredible shape rarely seen in SUVs,” said Ron Heiser, chief program engineer for the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Along with its all-new propulsion system, the Mach-E has another surprise under it hood and that’s a drainable front trunk storage unit. It offers you even more space to store your cargo as it does provide an additional 4.8 cubic feet of storage space and since it is drainable, customers can pack it full of ice and keep their favorite beverages cold for their pre-game tailgate.

The limited First Edition Mach-E, which is now sold out, has special red painted brake calipers that add to its look, as well as metallic pedal covers, contrasting seat stitching, and a scuff plate marked “First Edition.”

Our favorite aspect of the Mach-E’s interior is the available panoramic fixed-glass roof. It gives the Mach-E’s interior an even more futuristic feel that matches its all-electric performance. The fixed-glass roof has a special glass coating with infrared protection that helps the interior stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. In addition, there’s an inner layer between the glass that helps protect occupants against UV rays.

“Everywhere inside, the Mach-E represents a fusion of sleek, modern design and smart functionality,” writes Ford on its website.

You can opt for the premium Bang & Olufsen speakers that are seamlessly integrated across the front and float above the air vents like a sound bar. There’s also a floating flip-up armrest that doubles as a place to store purses or bags. You’ll also find traditional Mustang design cues like the double-cowl instrument panel that help round out the interior.

As for technology, you have the next-generation SYNC communications and entertainment system inside the Mach-E. It’s a sleek and modern interface that uses machine learning to quickly learn drivers’ preferences and it also gets better over time thanks to over-the-air updates. The system comes with an impressively large 15.5” screen. There’s also a large volume dial on the screen that you can use. A 10” digital gauge cluster additionally sits behind the steering wheel, and the display changes based on the driving mode you select.

Designed with SUV-size proportions to seat five adults comfortably, the Mach-E leaves plenty of space for friends, kids, and cargo. In addition to the space you have with the front trunk, you get up to 59.7 cubic feet of cargo space in the back when the rear seats are folded down. When they are up, there’s 29.7 cubic feet of space in the back to utilize.

The Mach-E is available in both standard-range (66 kWh usable lithium-ion battery) and extended-range (88 usable kWh battery). With the extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive configuration, the Mach-E has an EPA-estimated range of at least 300 miles. All-wheel drive is also available, though it knocks the Mach-E’s estimated range down. But in extended-range all-wheel drive configurations, the Mach-E targets 346 hp.

The two special performance versions of the Mach-E bring even more of the thrills that the iconic Mustang is famous for. Both GT configurations produce an estimated 480 hp, with the GT model targeting 600 lb.-ft. of torque and the GT Performance Edition targeting 634 lb.-ft of torque. The GT Performance Edition goes from 0 - 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, making it as fast off the line as the Porsche 911 GTS!

No matter which Mach-E you opt for, you’re getting an all-electric vehicle that delivers impressive performance. The Mustang Mach-E also offers three unique drive experiences — Whisper, Engage, and Unbridled. Each of the three modes offers finely tuned driving dynamics packaged with a distinct sensory experience. Features include custom-designed vehicle responsiveness such as sportier steering controls, ambient lighting, sounds tuned for an authentic all-electric experience, and dynamic cluster animations that are tied to driving behavior.

You can charge your Mach-E at home and the connect navigation system also identifies up-to-date public charging locations during trips and prompts owners to charge at the most convenient points on each drive. It helps make owning an all-electric vehicle even easier. The Mach-E can even learn the different driving styles of you and your family members and adjust the range estimates for the various drive profiles based on whether the person is known to drive more conservatively or aggressively.

As for competitors of the Mach-E, there’s the Tesla Model Y (and the more expensive Tesla Model X), the Audi E-Tron, and Jaguar I-Pace. The upcoming Volkswagen ID.4 will be another competitor for the Mach-E, as well as the upcoming GMC Hummer EV SUV. 

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is priced from $42,895 (before any federal tax incentives for purchasing an all-electric vehicle).
