5 Excellent SUVs for Moms Who Hate Minivans

Published May 13, 2018 by Elizabeth Jeneault

As a mom myself, I know how important it is for your vehicle to be practical and spacious. You always want to have enough room to be able to fit your carseat, stroller, pack n’ play, sports gear, coolers and more. But, the days of large minivans are coming to an end. More women, and moms, continue to turn to SUVs for a number of reasons. Sure, SUVs are becoming more popular in general, but they’re also safe, more spacious than cars, and stylish! So, with Mother’s Day in mind, here are five SUVs that any mom would love!

Ford Expedition

Let’s start our list with a full-size SUV that has plenty of space for mom and her crew! The 2018 Ford Expedition is a great option for many reasons. It can fit eight people comfortably, along with all of their belongings (teddy bears included)! A new available cargo management system converts the deep, tall cargo area into vertical storage with separate sections for easy access. Items can also be hidden out of view.

This large SUV is more than just spacious, however. It has style and it handles well. That means mom doesn’t have to worry about the vehicle feeling too large to handle. There’s also the added technology factor. The 2018 Expedition comes with USB ports as standard for all three rows. Available features, meanwhile, include a rear-seat entertainment system, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and more. There’s also Ford MyKey, which helps parents encourage teens to drive responsibly. You can program your key to limit top vehicle speeds and even increase seatbelt use!

Chevrolet Traverse

The second generation of the Chevrolet Traverse is definitely an SUV that could win mom over! While the mid-size SUV’s exterior design was said to be inspired by Chevrolet’s larger SUVs, it’s more curvy and feels more feminine. We should also note that while it’s not considered to be full-size, the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse can still fit up to eight passengers comfortably.

This newest rendition of the Traverse is lighter, safer and more sophisticated than the previous. It received a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score for safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There are up to 14 available advanced safety features. Similar to the Ford Expedition, there’s also technology that can give mom a report card on how her teen is driving when she’s not there.

Honda CR-V

If mom isn’t crazy about driving a large or mid-size SUV, the 2018 Honda CR-V could be an excellent option! It was completely redesigned just last year. Not to mention, the CR-V repeatedly tops lists of best compact SUVs. That’s because many vehicle experts argue the two-row, five-passenger CR-V just does a lot of things right. It has the safety features any family would want and is easy to maneuver, but still offers great cargo space. Not to mention, the fuel economy is great! Depending on which engine you choose, you’ll either get up to 34 or 32 miles per gallon on the highway.

What really sets the CR-V apart is the safety aspect. For example, every trim except for the base model comes with Honda Sensing. That means customers will get features like automatic emergency breaking, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring and so much more! When you have a family to protect, safety is everything! Being able to avoid an accident can also help you out financially by avoiding an auto insurance hike. Also standard on every CR-V except the base, is an impressive infotainment system that comes up with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Lastly, if you head to a major sporting event or a busy grocery store and can’t find your vehicle, you can use the HondaLink system technology to find it. Talk about a lifesaver for mom when she has kids needing naps in tow!

BMW X5

If mom is more about luxury, know the BMW X5 has it. The SUV, which BMW actually describes as a Sports Activity* Vehicle, also packs plenty of punch. But, while the X5 is powerful and comes with over 8 inches of ground clearance so it can be taken off the beaten path, it’s still incredibly stable and agile.

Where mom is sure to impress her girlfriends, though, is through the X5’s luxurious, top-of-the-line features that can be found throughout the cabin. The upholstery and finishes are beautiful. Then, there’s the incredible sound system as well as the impressive BMW Navigation system, which boasts a 10.2-inch high-resolution screen. Another great technology feature is the power remote trunk release. It can definitely help make things easier when packing in all of your kids’ belongings! Speaking of kids, there are available rear side window sunshades to protect them from the sun’s bright rays during long road trips. There’s also an optional third row to seat up to seven passengers instead of five if mom has more kids or family to pack in.

Infiniti QX60

We can’t ignore another luxury vehicle that mom would love, the Infiniti QX60! It’s so popular that it’s Infiniti’s top seller. It also has a more affordable starting price than some other luxury SUVs.

Like the X5, there’s an option for a third row to fit up to seven passengers. Overall, the SUV is roomy and certainly has an upscale feel to it. The engine is peppy, yet smooth. There’s a moonroof, rearview monitor, a special steering wheel, pushbutton start and plenty more to write home about! There are also plenty of additions you can tack on, like the optional dual 8-inch screens for the kiddos to enjoy in the rear. You can also add what Infiniti calls the world’s first Around View Monitor. Four cameras positioned around the vehicle help make parking a breeze. There’s also Backup Collision Prevention to help you avoid an embarrassing mistake! All around, the QX60 is an impressive, yet sensible choice!
