This vehicle first came out in 1979 and believe it or not, it hasn’t had a refresh until now. This 2019 G-Class is now more off-road capable, offers improved ride and handling, has a more modern cabin, and is roomier. But, as you can see here, it has thankfully kept its great character.

While updated for 2019, the G-Class still has its iconic, squared-off look. This is the 2019 G 550, but there’s also the more powerful AMG G 63 to consider. I love the colors of the 550 here, but keep in mind there are dozens of different colors to choose from. Advanced LED technology powers these round headlights.
The G-Class’s cabin has been improved. It’s more modern now and since the body is larger, there’s also more space in here. Five adults can fit comfortably, with improved legroom. High-quality leather and wood is used all over. Ambient LED lighting helps set the mood. The sunroof is now heat-rejecting, which is nice! I especially love the cockpit here, with the large 12.3” screens.
If you want all the power you can get, opt for the AMG G 63 with its hand-built version of the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine you’ll find in the G 550. It churns out a whopping 577 horsepower, but the G 550’s 416 hp version also offers great acceleration. Both are paired to a nine-speed automatic. There’s permanent four-wheel drive and the G-Class is also now more off-road capable!
Recap and rating time with our new rating system! The G-Class’ styling is just impeccable. It continues to have a great look, so I give it a 10 in that department. As for the more modern interior, it also impresses. I give that a 10 as well. Performance offered is great, no matter which G-Class you get. I give it a 10 there. Fuel economy is not great with the G 550 only getting an EPA-rated 13 miles per gallon city and 14 mpg combined, so I give it a 6 there. And as for value, the base G-Class starts at a whopping $124,500. That’s a lot more than rivals, but the G-Class is so special that I do feel it’s a good value, so I’ll give it a 9 there.
