A Maybach SUV? Maybe, says Mercedes

Published September 12, 2015 by Jayme Williams

While Maybach may be an unfamiliar name to many people, to the elite, it equates with some of the most luxurious and expensive vehicles ever hand-built. That was until 2013, when after more than 100 years, Maybach’s last vehicle was finished on December 17, 2012. While Maybach has been owned by Daimler-Benz since the 1960s, it was not until 2014 that Mercedes-Benz officially announced its resurrection as their ultra-luxury sub-brand. With a few luxury sedans already produced under the Maybach name as the Mercedes top of the line S Class, it only makes sense that a Maybach SUV would be a future addition to the revived Maybach lineup.

A Maybach SUV would focus on luxury and amenities

Mercedes-Benz rebranded its GL-Class of crossover SUVs to the GLS class for 2016 to not only create a more consistent naming structure, but also align them more closely with its S-Class luxury sedans. This logically opens the door for Mercedes to put the Maybach name on an S-Class crossover SUV as it did with the S600 sedan. With Rolls Royce and Bentley SUVs waiting in the wings to launch in the next few years, the Maybach moniker gives Mercedes-Benz the tools to compete in this elite group of SUVs. By combining the mechanics of a Mercedes crossover SUV with the over the top luxury associated with Maybach, there is no doubt a Maybach SUV would be on the shopping list of the incredibly wealthy.

So what would a Maybach SUV be like?

If the Maybach SUV or crossover SUV is anything like its defunct line of luxury cars, it will probably be like a mansion living room on wheels. The hand-built Maybach models of the past features the most exquisite leather, seats that mimicked the function of those found in expensive luxury jets and extras like sterling silver champagne sets, stone and gold-plated trim and entertainment systems that rivaled nearly every other vehicle on the market. Taking this no-limit-on-luxury attitude and applying it to a Maybach SUV could possibly give Mercedes the title for the most luxurious SUV ever made. What is uncertain is if Mercedes will keep the Maybach tradition of luxurious and abundant appointments over power and performance, or blend the two into the ultimate high-end luxury performance crossover SUV. Either way, the Maybach name means that every stitch, every fiber, every detail will be of the highest quality possible. As far as pricing, with the outgoing Maybach sedans going for upwards of $350,000 up to over a million for its pseudo-limousine, it is impossible to guess what a Maybach SUV price tag might be. Mercedes-Benz has put a lot into revamping its line of crossover SUVs and adding a Mercedes-Maybach version is very likely. While the Maybach SUV would be out of the price range of a majority of SUV buyers, it would give both Bentley and Rolls-Royce some competition among the world’s richest buyers. If the hints are accurate that it would be based on the current Maybach S600 sedan, there is no doubt that a Maybach SUV will give the extremely rich an extension of the comfort of their living room with plenty of room for extra guests.
