The 2016 Tesla Model X SUV to Debut as the First Luxury EV Crossover

The 2016 Tesla Model X SUV is not just a new model for Tesla, it opens up a door to an entirely new class of vehicles - the luxury EV crossover. With the success of the Model S sedan, Tesla realized that in order to garner the attention of an even larger market, they needed to appeal to the masses and what better way to do that than with a plug-in EV SUV. With station wagons a thing of the past, the SUV and crossover segment has taken over as the go-to for a family vehicle. Even for those without a family, the wide range of sizes, styles, and performance options available in today’s SUV market makes them appealing to a wide consumer base of those looking for something roomy and versatile yet environmentally and fuel budget friendly. The 2016 Tesla Model X will be built on the same platform as its popular S sedan, but provide more passenger room, cargo room and a taller stance for those that like to see and be seen.
The Tesla Model X will be as unique as Tesla itself
While the 2016 Tesla Model X will share a platform with the Model S, this is where the similarity ends. While it will be the same width as the Model S sedan, it will be taller and longer to provide more passenger and cargo room. The Model X will also feature standard size forward-facing third row seating that offers seating for up to seven passengers. To make access to the rear seats easier, Tesla will also introduce its version of a gullwing door setup called “falcon doors.” These double-hinged doors open up and out of the way to allow more room for entering and exiting as well as easier access to the cargo area. While the “falcon doors” will make accessing the Model X easier, they will not accommodate roof-mounted cargo boxes or luggage racks.
What makes the Tesla Model X move
The 2016 Tesla Model X will be powered by twin electric motors with dual 60- and 85-kWh battery packs. The twin motor setup gives the Model X all-wheel-drive capability making handling a breeze in any weather condition. While specific ranges have not been released, the additional weight of the SUV is expected to use approximately 10 percent more power than the Model S sedan it is based on. With these figures in mind, range is estimated to be approximately 200 miles. Although the Model X weighs more, Tesla expects it to perform as well as its Model S sedan with an estimated 0 to 60 mph time of about 4.4 seconds.
While the Model X is an SUV, it is still an EV
While the thought of being able to pile the family in a Tesla Model X for the next road trip and not continuously stopping for gas is almost a dream come true, owning an EV SUV crossover does require a bit more planning before your departure. When planning any long-distance road trip in an EV, it is a good idea to map out all the high-speed charging stations available along your route. While Tesla is working hard to increase the number of charging stations available to its customers, there may not be as many in your area or on the route to your destination. However, the money you save on fuel will certainly offer you a larger budget to enjoy your family vacation even more.
