In an effort to help you find the best SUV per segment, SUVs.com is revealing its annual awards. To do this, we examined SUV offerings in each segment to identify the best model in terms of performance, interior space, value, safety, technological and stylistic features.
For compact luxury SUVs, the choice was easy: the Jaguar F-Pace, the manufacturer’s newest SUV offering, is clearly the best model in its class. Below is a look at why we chose the F-Pace.
It might seem odd to factor affordability into the equation when discussing luxury models, but there’s a reason why we did so with the F-Pace. This SUV possesses an affordable cost, with a starting price of $42,390. To illustrate how tremendous of a value this is we used the research site Axlegeeks to find the average cost of 2017 SUVs in its segment. When compared to its counterparts, the F-Pace is $14,810 less expensive, representing an incredible value when you consider all the other benefits you receive with the SUV.
Because this is more of a performance model, it isn’t surprising to find its fuel economy is its one area where it keeps even with the pack. The F-Pace earns up to 20 combined mpg, which puts it right in line models like the Infiniti QX70.
However, one area where the F-Pace struggles is in fuel range. The SUV’s highway range of 382 miles is 125 miles less than what the average model in its class produces. Therefore, if you plan to do many highway excursions and fuel costs is a concern for you, this might not be the best model. Then again, when you see what this SUV can achieve from a performance standpoint, it might allay your fears.
The Jaguar F-Pace looks and drives more like a sports car than a traditional SUV. Along with its nimble handling that will make driving it delightful, it possesses enough power to make your drives exhilarating. The F-Pace comes equipped with a supercharged 3.0L V-6 engine that generates up to 340-horsepower.
While there are other models in its class that possesses more power—the Volvo XC90 T8 delivers 400 horsepower—for the class average, the F-Pace holds a slight advantage.
This becomes even more apparent when you examine its towing capacity, where its ability to tow up to 5,290 pounds means it can haul 290 pounds more than its immediate peers average. This result in an SUV with enough power and capability to handle your varied demands.
Jaguar accounted for your interior needs when it designed its F-Pace model, providing it with 33.50 cubic feet of trunk space. This gives it a roomier trunk than the Volkswagen Touring V6 (32.10 cubic feet) and the Infiniti QX70 (24.80 cubic feet.)
Jaguar provides many available driver assistance features on the F-Pace to help keep you apprised of your surrounding conditions. The Traffic Sign with Intelligent Speed Limiter feature uses a front-facing camera to read upcoming traffic signs then displays them on the driver’s information display. When activated, it will also work to keep the SUV within the legal speed limits.
Another outstanding feature is the autonomous emergency braking. This system also uses a forward-facing camera to look for and identify potential collisions. If it detects one is imminent, it will sound an audible warning, alerting the driver of the danger ahead. The system could also apply emergency braking if it detects the driver is slow to take action.
This is just a sampling of the many unique safety features available on this SUV. These proactive measures will help you gain more information quicker to aid you in minimizing collisions.
The F-Pace is as tech savvy as it is capable and stylish. It comes equipped with the Jaguar Incontrol Touch system, where you can access its apps, use precise climate control and receive directions on its eight-inch touchscreen. This makes it incredibly easy to access the information you need from a centralized location while keeping your eyes on the road.
The Jaguar F-Pace topped some worthy competition. Here is a closer look at the runner ups in this segment and how they compare to the F-Pace.
The 2016 BMW X3 has several benefits over the F-Pace. For one, its starting price of $38,950 makes it more affordable than the F-Pace. This affordability stretches further when you consider the X3 possesses better fuel efficiency, with a combined 24 mpg.
With this said, there are several areas where the F-Pace makes up ground. The X3 only generates 240-horsepower, giving the F-Pace the decisive edge in this regard. Another area where the F-Pace leads is in interior space, where it holds an advantage over the X3 in trunk space (33.50 cubic feet to 27.60 cubic feet.) Overall, the X3 has many enticing benefits, but the F-Pace is more spacious and powerful.
Another excellent option is the 2016 Volvo XC90. This model is also more affordable than the F-Pace, with a beginning price of $36,600. The XC90 is much more efficient too with a combined 27 mpg.
However, the F-Pace tops the XC90 in performance. The XC90 generates 240 horsepower, which, while respectable, is significantly less than the 340-horsepower output of the F-Pace. The F-Pace also has more trunk space and can tow more, so while the XC90 has many features that make it enticing, if performance and capability are your preferences, the F-Pace is the best choice.
Since arriving on the scene, the Jaguar F-Pace generated buzz due to its agile styling, exceptional performance and smart technological and safety offerings. With impressive affordability and ample interior space, this SUV is the whole package and will continue to garner attention as it stays ahead of the pack.
